Masts

Carbon masts to replace their wooden counterparts tend to be a bit smaller in diameter and under half the weight. You can have a tapered top and since they are made from two parts we are usually asked to make a sliding connection in the middle so the whole thing can be taken apart and travelled inside the boat.

Since we mostly do luggers with unstayed masts we can fit a large sheave at the mast top with the halyard coming down beside the mast. The sheave pin is bronze. At the other end we can get a heel plug machined up to fit your boat.

We find that leather is still the best thing to protect spars where they cross each other or at the mast partner and this is something else we can do.

Yards

We are pleased to be able to offer Carbon yards which are tapered in exactly the same manner as a wooden one would be. They taper from about the middle of the yard to a thinner section at the ends. This gradual taper in diameter toward both ends from the middle ensures the correct bending characteristics to suit your sail thus giving the best possible shape. Once again the weight aloft is much reduced making sail and boat easier to handle.

Booms

Once again, lightness and stiffness is key. The boom performs better if as light as possible, it hangs off to one side easier on a run and with less effort to hold it there. Being stiffer the foot of the sail is more stable. A bendy boom allows the sail to gain camber in the gusts making life more difficult at a critical moment. A light boom is easier to gybe having less inertia as it comes across.

Lastly if the thing hits you on the head during a momentary lapse of concentration a round boom gives a smaller bruise than a square one!
